Tanning Ledge and Pool Step Additions in Flower Mound, TX

Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing adds a tanning ledge, new pool steps or an underwater bench to an existing pool in Flower Mound, Texas. Ledge Lounger, a maker of in-pool furniture, describes tanning ledges, sun shelves and Baja shelves as shallow areas typically 6 to 9 inches deep, and the CDC’s Model Aquatic Health Code calls them underwater shelves: an expanded top step or a separate area many feet wide and long, mainly for lounging in very shallow water.

Choosing a tanning ledge, steps or bench

Depth and size of a sun shelf

Ledge Lounger’s Signature Chaise fits water up to 9 inches deep, and the maker offers deeper models for deeper ledges. Before choosing furniture, it advises measuring the ledge’s length and width at water level rather than at the coping, checking the depth at several points because many ledges taper, and watching for a pronounced slope, which can make the furniture unstable. Published figures for 2026 put a typical ledge at 30 to 80 square feet.

Bubblers in the ledge

Pentair’s ColorVision bubbler goes in water 2 to 12 inches deep, at least 3 feet from walls and from other bubblers, set flush with the pool finish in a niche in the gunite and fed by a 1-1/2-inch water line and 1-inch electrical conduit. The height of its plume depends on the water depth, the nozzle size and the flow, and Pentair treats its plume chart as a reference only, since plumbing and water conditions change the result.

Steps, benches and swimouts

For residential pools, the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code calls for a way in and out wherever a shallow area is more than 24 inches deep at its shallowest point, placed on the shallow side of the first slope change; it may be steps, stairs, a ladder, a bench, a swimout or another approved design. Each stair tread needs a walking surface of at least 240 square inches and a depth of at least 10 inches, every riser but the top and bottom ones stays at 12 inches or less, and the seat of an underwater bench or swimout sits no more than 20 inches below the design waterline. A beach or sloping entry may be no steeper than 1 in 7. Flower Mound adopted the 2024 edition with local amendments, so confirm the figures for your pool with the Town’s Building Inspections.

  • Ledge furniture water: typically 6–9 in. (Ledge Lounger)
  • Bubbler water depth: 2–12 in. (Pentair)
  • Bench or swimout seat: 20 in. max below waterline (2021 ISPSC)
  • Stair tread: 10 in. min depth (2021 ISPSC)

Adding a ledge or steps to an existing pool

What the retrofit involves

A Dallas–Fort Worth builder’s 2026 guide describes adding a ledge to an existing pool as draining it, excavating beside the shell, placing new concrete, replastering the whole interior and often re-routing plumbing, and it puts the cost premium over building the same feature with a new pool at typically 50 to 100%. The same drain-down can take a new finish, tile and coping as part of wider pool remodeling, or another addition such as adding a spa to an existing pool.

Joining new concrete to the old shell

The American Shotcrete Association says a water blaster of 5,000 psi or more, or abrasive blasting, roughens and cleans the old concrete, and that the saturated surface-dry condition it asks for means the surface feels damp without leaving water on a hand. It recommends dry-mix shotcrete (gunite) with a 28-day compressive strength of at least 4,000 psi, placed by an ACI-certified nozzleman, and says shotcrete placed in layers bonds well without cold joints as long as each hardened layer is cleaned of loose material, laitance and overspray first.

Ledges, steps and diving pools

In a pool designed for diving, the code keeps steps, stairs, ladders, underwater benches and other features outside the minimum diving water envelope. Making a diving pool shallower is covered on the page about diving pool conversion.

Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing can price a ledge or new steps together with the finish they need.

Permits and setbacks for a ledge in Flower Mound

A ledge or a new set of steps changes the pool itself, and the Town’s amended pool code requires anyone who means to enlarge, alter or repair a pool or spa to get the permits first; Building Inspections can say how your job is classed. Setbacks matter too when a ledge pushes the shell outward. The enlarged pool must stay at least five feet from each side and rear property line and out of easements. It must also stay no closer than 3 feet to any building on a foundation, nor closer in feet than it is deep at that point, unless a sealed engineered design is used. Fees, plan review and what an association may ask to see are in the guide to pool remodel permits and HOA approval. In Wellington, the association's Architectural Control Committee must approve exterior alterations and additions in writing before work begins, although none of its public documents mentions ledges or steps.

Keller, where the median household income is $174,950 in 2020–2024 survey estimates, issues a separate pool permit, $500 for an in-ground pool, and lists tiling and similar finish work as exempt while telling owners to check with Building Services about a specific project; our page on tanning ledge and pool step additions in Keller covers that city. Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing will walk you through the permit before any concrete is cut.

Tanning ledge questions and answers

What is a tanning ledge?

It is a broad, very shallow shelf inside the pool, either an extra-wide top step or a separate area, where people lounge in very shallow water on chaises or chairs made for the purpose. Ledge Lounger puts most at 6 to 9 inches deep, and a typical one covers 30 to 80 square feet in published 2026 figures.

What is the ledge of a pool called?

Builders and furniture makers call the shallow lounging area a tanning ledge, a sun shelf or a Baja shelf, and the CDC’s Model Aquatic Health Code calls it an underwater shelf. Narrower places to sit in the water are underwater seats and benches in the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, which also names swimouts.

How deep should a tanning ledge be?

For in-pool furniture, Ledge Lounger plans on 6 to 9 inches, and its Signature Chaise fits water up to 9 inches deep. Pentair sets its bubblers in water 2 to 12 inches deep. In a public pool, a ledge used as the required way in and out sits no more than 12 inches below the waterline under the 2021 code.

Can you add a tanning ledge to an existing pool?

Yes. A Dallas–Fort Worth builder’s 2026 figures put adding a tanning ledge or Baja shelf to an existing pool at $2,000 to $10,000, depending on size, finish and complexity, with the pool drained, new concrete placed beside the shell and the interior replastered. Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing will look at your pool and talk through where a ledge would fit.

How much does it cost to add steps to a pool?

National figures for 2026 put adding steps or benches during a resurfacing job at $200 to $5,000, and Dallas figures for the same year put pool step repair or replacement at an average of $4,500. National figures for 2025 put a full wall step installation at around $4,500 or more.
