Fiberglass Pool Repair and Resurfacing in Flower Mound, TX

Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing handles fiberglass pool repair and resurfacing in Flower Mound, Texas: spider cracks and osmotic blisters in the gelcoat, stains and scale, and refinishing a worn shell with a sprayed polymer coating or epoxy pool paint. River Pools, a fiberglass pool maker, says most fiberglass pools never need resurfacing, but that neglected water chemistry or cleaning can wear the gelcoat down. By the same maker's account, the need for refinishing usually shows only once a pool reaches 20 or 30 years of age.

Faded, chalky gelcoat on the steps of a drained fiberglass pool

Gelcoat and how it wears

A surface sprayed in the factory

A fiberglass pool's finish is its gelcoat, a colored resin sprayed onto the shell when the pool is made. River Pools applies it in three passes to 25 to 30 mils: too thin and it can blister from an improper cure, too thick and it can crack. Latham's care manual says the finish is seven to eight times thicker than a normal coat of paint, so scratches are rarely more than superficial. River Pools adds that gelcoat belongs in a factory, because it must cure at a consistent temperature that would be nearly impossible to control outdoors.

Fading, chalking and roughness

In the sun the color fades, River Pools says, but evenly and gradually. Tallman Pools, another maker, says incorrect water chemistry can discolor, chalk, fade, etch or scale the gelcoat, and ecoFINISH describes worn shells as chalky, discolored and rough to the touch. When that wear arrives is disputed: River Pools says a pool is usually 20 or 30 years old before refinishing is needed, while ecoFINISH, which sells a refinishing coating, says most fiberglass pools show wear after 10 to 15 years of regular use.

Fiberglass pool repair: cracks, blisters, bulges and stains

Spider cracks and hairline cracks

Spider cracks are hairline cracks in the gelcoat, typically cosmetic rather than structural. River Pools traces them to pressure on the shell beyond what the gelcoat can flex, most often from improper installation, while Barrier Reef Pools says they most commonly form in transport. Latham calls hairline cracks in the gelcoat not uncommon, with patch and repair kits available from its dealers. FGCI's gelcoat putty, sold mainly for boats, is mixed with MEK-P catalyst at 1.5 percent, overfilled into the roughened crack, cured for 12 to 24 hours and sanded flat. Few repairs are fully invisible, River Pools says, and single-layer solid gelcoats match more easily than metallic or flake finishes. Cracks through a concrete shell are a different job, covered under pool crack repair.

Osmotic blisters

An osmotic blister forms when water passes through the gelcoat, meets contaminants and makes a larger molecule that can't leave the way it came, pushing the gelcoat out until it separates from the laminate behind it. Barrier Reef Pools ties it to a surface eroded by chemical imbalance, and River Pools calls the blisters cosmetic, not structural. Gougeon Brothers' repair guide for boats warns that the acidic blister fluid is often under as much as 200 psi, so blisters are opened with eye protection, and calls thorough drying the most crucial step. Makers' warranties cover blistering for different terms: Latham for as long as the original buyer owns the pool, Glimmerglass for ten years and Barrier Reef for 15.

Bulging walls

Bulging walls can come from sand backfill that becomes saturated and liquefies against the shell, River Pools says, which is why it backfills with gravel. Tallman Pools warns that excess hydrostatic pressure around the shell can cause shifting, bulging or even failure.

Stains and scale

Tallman Pools reads stains by color: green, brown or tan for organic stains; orange, brown or tan for iron; green, blue or teal for copper; brown, black or purple for manganese. Black spots called cobalt stains are a reaction rather than a stain, where water passing through the gelcoat reacts with the resin beneath. A drop of muriatic acid tells calcium carbonate scale, which foams, from calcium silicate, which doesn't and is best left to a fiberglass technician. Tallman allows only stain removers made for fiberglass and says never to sand, polish or buff the gelcoat unless a fiberglass professional directs it.

Fiberglass pool resurfacing: coatings, epoxy paint or gelcoat

Why a whole pool isn't re-gelcoated in place

River Pools says gelcoat can fix smaller areas but isn't suitable for resurfacing a whole pool already in the ground. Some gelcoat sellers show customers' pools resurfaced with their product, so the point is disputed, and ecoFINISH notes that re-gelcoating limits the color to light shades such as white, baby blue, tan and light grey.

Thermo-polymer powder coatings

River Pools' standard recommendation for refinishing is ecoFINISH, a polyethylene powder sprayed with a compressed-air gun and set with heat. The steps run: sandblast if paint or residue is stuck to the surface, clean and inspect, coat the whole pool with epoxy, spray the powder onto the tacky epoxy, cure it with heat, and build it up in a few layers. It dries almost immediately, so refilling can start the same day, and ecoFINISH says pools and spas with its coatings need no start-up and can be heated straight after filling. A hot tub on its own is covered under spa resurfacing.

Epoxy pool paint

The paint makers that allow painting fiberglass specify epoxy. Insl-x recommends only its epoxy pool paint for fiberglass shells, not its waterborne paint; Ramuc names its Hi Build or HB31 epoxies; Olympic calls for two coats of POXOLON 2 or one of ZERON over GUNZITE primer. Their prep differs: Insl-x scuff-sands unpainted fiberglass with 150 to 180 grit and lets it dry 24 hours; Ramuc abrades to a #80 grit profile and acid-washes off mineral deposits; Olympic sands in straight lines with coarse sandpaper and needs no acid wash. ecoFINISH, which sells a competing coating, argues that paint bonds poorly to smooth, non-porous gelcoat. Paint for plaster and concrete pools is covered under pool painting.

  • Gelcoat: 3 passes, 25–30 mils (River Pools)
  • Insl-x prep: 150–180 grit, 24 hours dry
  • Ramuc prep: #80 grit profile
  • Powder coating: refill the same day (River Pools)

Draining a fiberglass pool without damaging it

Latham warns that a pool drained without first relieving the hydrostatic pressure on the shell will buckle and crack, and that draining voids its warranty unless a dealer handles it. River Pools says only authorized fiberglass professionals should drain a pool, and Tallman Pools requires its written authorization. River Pools' steps are to confirm dry weather for the whole job, check for and remove groundwater, brace the pool, typically with three braces 18 to 24 inches down the side walls, and watch that the floor doesn't lift as the water comes out. Tallman asks owners to check the groundwater inspection port before any service that lowers the water, and to pump slowly so the soil, sand or gravel around the shell isn't disturbed.

Around Flower Mound, NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Grapevine Dam make May the wettest month, at 4.73 inches, followed by October at 4.46, with August the driest at 2.09. Check the Town's water stage before the pool is emptied as well; in Stage 1, a refill after maintenance is treated as outside water use and kept to the watering-schedule days.

Water care for fiberglass in Flower Mound

Fiberglass makers disagree on calcium. Latham's warranty lists calcium hardness of 250 to 350 ppm with pH 7.2 to 7.6; River Pools says to keep it below 120 ppm with pH 7.2 to 7.4, and warns that high pH plus high calcium damages the surface; Tallman Pools sets 80 to 120 ppm and says scale needs only a pH above 7.4 with calcium hardness above 120. River Pools calls calcium the root cause of most discoloration on fiberglass. Tallman and River Pools both rule out calcium hypochlorite, Tallman also bans dichlor granules and trichlor tablets and shocks only with liquid chlorine or a non-chlorine oxidizer, while Latham's older manual allows cal-hypo if it is pre-dissolved.

Flower Mound's 2025 water quality report doesn't print calcium hardness, and the Town gives monthly test results on request, so check the fill water against your pool maker's range. Our page on fiberglass pool repair in Hickory Creek covers the same work there. Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing will talk through a water test before any repair is booked.

Fiberglass pool questions and answers

Can fiberglass pools be repaired?

Yes. Gelcoat itself suits smaller repairs, River Pools says, and a gelcoat putty can fill scratches, dings and cracks before it is sanded flat. In Gougeon Brothers' method, blisters are opened, the damaged material is dug out and the laminate is thoroughly dried before the repair. A skilled repair can be made far less noticeable, though rarely invisible.

How much does it cost to resurface a fiberglass pool?

National averages for 2026 put fiberglass resurfacing or recoating at $6,000 to $15,000, and a 2025 national guide gives $7,000 to $15,000 depending on the pool's size and finish. One Dallas fiberglass company's undated figures put complete refinishing at $8,000 to $15,000.

How much does it cost to re-gel a fiberglass pool?

National figures for 2026 put basic gel coat resurfacing at $5,000 to $8,000 and a full fiberglass layer replacement at $12,000 to $20,000 or more. River Pools, though, says gelcoat suits smaller repairs rather than a whole pool already in the ground, and its standard refinish is a sprayed polymer coating.

What happens to a fiberglass pool after 25 years?

By River Pools' account, that's around when refinishing comes due: it says a fiberglass pool is usually 20 or 30 years old before it needs it. By then the color may have faded, evenly, in the sun, and poorly balanced water may have left the gelcoat chalky, stained or rough.

Can a fiberglass pool be refinished?

Yes, three ways: a sprayed, heat-set polymer coating, which River Pools recommends; an epoxy pool paint, which Insl-x, Ramuc and Olympic all specify for fiberglass; or new gelcoat, which River Pools limits to smaller repairs and ecoFINISH says restricts the color to light shades. The coating route lets the pool be refilled the same day.
