Pool Coping Repair and Replacement in Flower Mound, TX
Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing handles pool coping repair and replacement in Flower Mound, Texas: resetting and regrouting loose pieces, replacing worn concrete, travertine, brick or paver coping, and resealing the joint where the coping meets the deck. Coping caps the top of the pool wall between the shell and the deck, and when it is installed properly, says the stone maker Eco Outdoor USA, splashed water flows away from the pool toward the deck drains. Around a home pool, typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2026 count 60 to 100 linear feet of coping.

Pool coping types and materials
Poured, precast and cantilevered coping
The three common types are poured-in-place coping, formed on the shell and cast on top of the bond beam; precast pieces such as stone or pavers, set on a mortar bed on the bond beam; and a cantilevered deck, where the deck itself forms the pool's edge in one continuous pour. For a cantilevered edge, Stegmeier's foam forms are taped and tied to the waterline tile, set up the morning of the pour and stripped while the concrete is still wet enough to finish. The tile goes in first, and the top of the bond beam is covered with 15-pound felt as a bond breaker so the deck can move without disturbing the tile; a coping-only pour gets no bond breaker, because it has to bond to the pool wall.
Travertine and limestone
Travertine, often called travertine marble, is really a land-formed limestone, the Natural Stone Institute says, and like marble it is calcium carbonate, open to etching by mild acids, with water absorption from under 1 percent to over 10. Voids from trapped gas are part of all true travertine: the open ones are filled at the factory with cement or resin, hidden ones can open later under a concentrated load, and filling them in place is accepted practice. Around pools, the Institute advises clear water and a mild bleach solution for algae, and no lemon, vinegar or other acids. The stone underfoot is covered under travertine pool decks.
Brick and paver coping
Marion Ceramics fires its brick coping at near 2000°F and says it stays colorfast in sun and pool chemicals, with a slightly textured face for slip resistance; Acme Brick quotes the maker that brick coping suits gunite, fiberglass and vinyl-liner pools alike. Marion ties its limited warranty to its installation instructions, asks that the coping be maintained like brick pavers as the Brick Industry Association recommends, and says some installers don't put enough thought into expansion joints.

Why pool coping cracks, loosens and stains
Joints, mortar and moisture
Without a working flexible joint between deck and coping, the deck's seasonal expansion and contraction often dislodges coping and tile and cracks the waterline tile horizontally; recurring horizontal cracks can also come from leveling mortar on top of the bond beam coming unbonded. Mortar can work its way out of coping joints over time, Marion Ceramics says. White powder on stone coping is efflorescence, mineral salts carried up by water from below and left behind as it evaporates, and if it keeps coming back, the Natural Stone Institute says the source of the moisture has to be found. Where the waterline tile has cracked too, see pool tile repair.
Flower Mound's clay and summer sun
The heaviest clays mapped in Flower Mound, Heiden and Branyon, reach a linear extensibility of 12.2 and 13.0 percent, inside the county soil survey's very high shrink-swell class of more than 9 percent, and NRCS rates both Very limited for concrete driveways and sidewalks because of shrink-swell. The survey says soils rated moderate to very high can damage buildings, roads and other structures as they shrink and swell. Stone feels the heat as well: the Natural Stone Institute says thermal expansion and long sun exposure in hot climates can affect a stone's color and its movement joints, and Grapevine Dam's 1991–2020 summer normal high is 93.9°F.

How pool coping is reset or replaced
Preparing the bond beam
On a concrete pool the wall itself carries the coping, which Unilock calls the easiest kind of pool to cope, and the first step is to scarify the top of the wall so the mortar and coping bond well. Where the old bond beam has to be built back up, for example to re-level it under new coping, its surface must be sound and clean, roughened by chipping, water-blasted and coated with a bonding paste, and kept damp but not wet so the paste doesn't dry early.
Setting the new pieces
Unilock dry-fits and cuts every piece first, builds the 90-degree corners before filling in between them, and prefers mitered corners for looks, though butt joints are easier and a coined corner, a contrasting corner piece, needs the least cutting. Each piece is set with concrete adhesive between the coping and the pool wall and a bed of modified mortar, such as ARDEX X32 or X37 spread with a 1/4-inch notched trowel, under the rest; the bed lets each piece's slope be tuned, while the adhesive gives the job its longevity. Joints are 1/4 inch wide with a flexible exterior tile grout, and mortar is cleaned off the face before it cures. Units up to 72 inches long suit straight walls, while curves look better with units no longer than 18 inches.
Overhang and slope
The makers disagree here. Unilock overhangs coping about 2 inches and slopes it 2 percent away from the pool, checked with a string line and a torpedo level. Belgard sets paver coping level in mortar with a consistent 1-inch overhang, since the deck carries the slope, and uses construction adhesive rather than mortar on the track of an automatic pool cover.
Where the waterline tile and the interior finish are due as well, pool remodeling takes all three on in one project. Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing will talk through a reset or a full replacement for your coping.

(469) 526-3886The sealed joint between coping and deck
Under the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, the isolation joint where coping meets a concrete deck must be watertight and must shield the coping and its mortar bed from the deck's expected movement. On poured and precast coping, the vertical joint is usually filled with foam backer rod and covered with flexible mastic, while the horizontal joint under a cantilevered deck is usually left open. W. R. Meadows' DECK-O-SEAL, a two-part polysulfide sealant made for pool decks, stretches or compresses up to 25 percent once cured, and its pourable grade is made for use above the waterline. Where pavers meet the coping, the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute calls for a urethane or neoprene sealant over backer rod. Resealing that joint on its own is covered under pool mastic and expansion joint repair.

(469) 526-3886Coping rules and permits in Flower Mound
The 2021 code wants decks, ramps, coping and similar step surfaces slip resistant and cleanable, inlaid markers included. The 2024 edition, which the Town adopted by Ordinance No. 31-25, adds a test: where a surface is evaluated for slip resistance, it should reach, wet, a pendulum rating of P4 under Standards Australia AS 4586 or a dynamic coefficient of friction of 0.42 under ANSI A326.3, with the design professional choosing the level for the surface and its traffic. The Town's amended pool code requires permits to alter or repair a pool, so ask its Building Inspections whether a coping job needs one before the old coping comes off.

(469) 526-3886Pool coping questions and answers
How much does it cost to repair pool coping?
Typical Dallas–Fort Worth coping repairs run $500 to $3,000 in 2026, depending on the extent, the material and how easy the coping is to reach. National figures from 2025 put replacing coping at $30 to $50 a linear foot, depending on the material. Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing prices a coping job after seeing it.
How much does it cost to replace the coping around a pool?
A full replacement typically costs $3,000 to $12,000 or more around Dallas–Fort Worth in 2026, depending on pool size, material and the bond beam's condition; a standard 15x30 pool with about 90 to 100 linear feet of mid-range coping usually runs $4,000 to $8,000.
What are the common problems with pool coping?
The sources name loose or cracked pieces where the deck has pushed on them without a working flexible joint, mortar working out of the joints, horizontal cracks in the waterline tile below, hidden voids opening in travertine, and white efflorescence where moisture rises through stone. Marion Ceramics adds that some installers give expansion joints too little thought.
How often do you replace pool coping?
It depends on the material. A Dallas–Fort Worth guide from 2026 gives bull nose 15 to 25 years, cantilever 15 to 20, brick 20 to 30, pavers 20 to 30, travertine 20 to 35 and natural stone 25 to 40 or more, and national guides from 2026 say quality coping lasts 10 to 30 years depending on material and maintenance.
Can inground pool coping be replaced?
Yes. On a concrete pool the wall carries the coping, which Unilock calls the easiest case, and Marion Ceramics says brick coping can go on gunite, fiberglass or vinyl-liner pools. A cantilevered edge is different, because it is poured in one piece with the deck.
