Pool Water Features and Waterfalls in Flower Mound, TX
Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing adds pool water features in Flower Mound, Texas: sheer descents, scuppers, rock waterfalls and deck jets, set into the bond beam, a raised wall or the deck of an existing pool. Pentair recommends mounting a sheet-style waterfall no higher than 3 feet, because above that the sheet begins to break apart and make a buffeting noise, and a rain effect no higher than 6 feet.

Types of pool water features
Sheer descents and rain effects
Pentair says a sheet effect is thin and sensitive to wind, and narrows as it falls. It plans about 15 gallons per minute for each foot of waterfall, so a 3-foot waterfall needs 45 gallons per minute; 10 per foot is the least it will run on, though it may not give the look wanted. Each waterfall gets its own flow control valve after the filter and 2-inch plumbing, and a variable-speed pump is recommended.
Scuppers and spillways
Custom Molded Products’ instructions for Bobe scuppers allow one in the bond beam or on top of it, with an extra inch notched out around a scupper set in the beam for leveling. Each water feature gets its own pump plumbed with at least 2-inch pipe and a filter strainer between the pump and the feature, and every scupper has a bonding lug on the back. Pebble Technology International designs its copper scuppers for 10 to 30 gallons per minute per linear foot, or 15 to 40 for scuppers 36 inches and wider, warns that wind can affect the water sheet, and says copper darkens to a patina from weather and pool chemicals.
Deck jets
Pentair’s Deck Jet is cast into a concrete deck or the gunite sidewall of the pool, wired to the rebar so it stays put while the concrete is placed, with a shield plug flush with the finished surface until the hardscape is done. Pentair recommends filtered water for deck jets and a PVC ball valve on each one where there are several, because they need so little flow and pressure that differences in pipe length show in the effect.
Rock waterfalls and raised walls
Where a raised wall holds water on one face and dries on the other, the American Shotcrete Association’s guidance on negative-edge and above-ground pool walls applies: such walls need measures that make them watertight, since constant one-way water movement leaches calcium and can badly deteriorate the concrete over time. Salt building up behind tile or a coating can break down the binder and debond it, and the Association advises against putting a paint, sealer or coating that doesn’t breathe on a surface already showing efflorescence. New efflorescence only days old usually comes off with a bristle brush and water; left to harden into a dense deposit, it can be very hard to remove. Tile for a raised wall is covered with glass tile and all-tile pool finishes.

Setting a waterfall in the bond beam
Pentair’s installation steps start by notching the bond beam and fixing a level board to the side of the pool as a guide and mortar dam. The unit is bedded in mortar flush with the board, the area under its lip must be completely supported by mortar or the coping will warp it, and the discharge edge clears the tile line by 3/4 inch. The supply line and baffle have to be supported rather than hanging off the lip, where joints can fail and leak, and curved waterfalls must be cut at the factory, not in the field.
Clean water for the feature
Pentair wants a 20-micron or finer cartridge filter supplying its waterfalls, not a DE or sand filter, because debris in unfiltered water disrupts the flow and the waterfall can’t be cleaned out. Pebble Technology International’s scupper warranty doesn’t cover plumbing leaks that come from faulty installation.
Finishes above the water and North Texas freezes
SGM says its Diamond Brite finish can be used on waterfalls and negative-edge pools, but above the water it has a dry look, some check cracking may occur, and water curing exposed areas for 7 to 28 days lessens shrinkage cracking. Blisters trapped there during troweling fill with water and may delaminate in freezing weather, and the finish will develop a waterline ring that needs regular maintenance. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for its Grapevine Dam station count 44.3 nights a year at or below freezing.

Permits for a water feature
Flower Mound’s amended pool code requires a permit before anyone alters or repairs a pool or spa, or any system the code regulates, so ask Building Inspections whether your feature needs one. In Canyon Falls, PD-98 bars pools, spas and decks from encroaching into the minimum side yards, and pool equipment in view of a street or common area must be screened. In Bartonville, where the median owner-occupied home is valued at $932,700 in 2020–2024 survey estimates and estate zoning sets minimum lots of two and five acres, the Town’s pool permit checklist asks for a site plan and a pool plan stamped by CoServ, and our page on pool water features in Bartonville covers that town.

How much does it cost to add a water feature to a pool?
Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2026 put a basic waterfall or scupper added to an existing pool at $1,000 to $5,000, a sheer descent at $1,500 to $5,000 and a rock waterfall at $3,000 to $15,000. National figures for 2025 put installing a water feature at $450 to $5,000. Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing prices a feature after seeing the pool’s edge and plumbing.
Can I add a water feature to my existing pool?
Yes. Pentair’s waterfalls usually go in the bond beam just above the tile line or in a raised wall above it, scuppers can sit in the beam or on top of it, and deck jets are cast into the concrete deck or the gunite sidewall. Each needs its own supply: Custom Molded Products calls for a dedicated pump on its scuppers, and Pentair a flow control valve on each waterfall.
What are the best water features for an inground pool?
It depends on the wall, the wind and the budget. A sheer descent gives a thin sheet that is sensitive to wind and is best kept to 3 feet; a copper scupper weathers to a patina; deck jets are cast into the deck itself; and a rock waterfall runs $3,000 to $15,000 in 2026 Dallas–Fort Worth figures.
How high can a pool waterfall be?
Pentair recommends a maximum mounting height of 3 feet for a sheet effect, since above that the sheet starts to break apart and make a buffeting noise, and 6 feet for a rain effect.
Does a water feature need its own pump?
Custom Molded Products’ scupper instructions give each water feature a dedicated pump plumbed with at least 2-inch pipe and a filter strainer before the feature. Pentair plans about 15 gallons per minute per foot of waterfall, with a flow control valve after the filter for each one, and recommends a variable-speed pump.
