Stamped Concrete Pool Decks in Flower Mound, TX
Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing handles stamped concrete pool decks in Flower Mound, Texas: new decks colored and stamped while the concrete is wet, with control joints tooled or cut and a slip-resistant sealer, as well as stamped overlays on existing concrete. Brickform, a stamped-concrete materials maker, lists pool decks among the places where a pattern pressed into wet concrete gives the look of stone, brick or tile, and its own steps space those control joints six feet apart across the slab.

How a stamped concrete pool deck is colored and stamped
Integral color or color hardener
Color goes in one of two ways, Brickform explains. Integral color is mixed into the concrete in the truck and colors it all the way through, while color hardener is a powder spread on the fresh concrete that adds color and strengthens the surface; with integral color, a hardener isn't needed.
Stamps, texture skins and release
The stamps are flexible mats or texture skins, typically polyurethane, that come in sets so a large area takes a consistent pattern. A release agent keeps them from sticking: Brickform's Liquid Release is colorless, and its Antique Release adds color while also acting as the bond breaker for stamping.
Control joints
Brickform tools control joints in with a groover to prevent cracking as the concrete cures, or cuts them afterward, every six feet and across the full width of the slab. Other sources space them differently: the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association recommends no more than 24 to 36 times the slab's thickness, and 15 feet at most, while pool guidelines written in 2007 by a Houston geotechnical engineer for that city's expansive clay keep joints generally no more than eight feet apart, with the flatwork sloped about 2 percent away from the pool. The 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code asks for deck joints that keep visible cracks inside the control joints. For a deck of separate units that can be lifted and re-laid instead, see travertine and paver pool decks.

(469) 526-3886Sealers and slip resistance on a stamped deck
Brickform recommends film-forming sealers for stamped decks and overlays, because they bring out the color, and penetrating sealers for exposed-aggregate and broom finishes; film sealers need recoating every 18 to 24 months, while penetrating sealers last three to five years but do less for color. A film can get slick when wet, so Brickform has grit broadcast into the first coat while it is still tacky, or a sealer used with grit already in the can, and for salt-water pools, which spray salt onto the deck, it advises a sealer made to resist chlorides.
W. R. Meadows makes DECK-O-GRIP W/B, a clear, water-based sealer for exterior decorative concrete that names pool areas and stamped concrete among its uses, and its DECK-O-GRIP sealer carries a non-slip additive rated at a wet static coefficient of friction of at least .60 under ASTM C 1028. Where a deck surface is tested for slip resistance, the 2024 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, which the Town adopted, asks for a wet pendulum rating of at least P4 or a dynamic coefficient of friction of at least 0.42, with the design professional choosing the level for the surface and its traffic.
Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing will talk through the sealer, the grit and the salt question for your deck.

(469) 526-3886Stamped pool decks in Flower Mound: clay, slope and the Town's rules
Ground and slope
The 1980 Denton County soil survey rates shrink-swell potential by how much a clod of soil changes in length between air-dry and field capacity, from low, under 3 percent, to very high, over 9 percent, and says a moderate to very high rating can mean damage to buildings, roads and other structures, so special design is often needed. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association wants the subgrade under a slab compacted and sloped for drainage. On the surface, the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code sets a minimum slope of 1/8 inch per foot for textured, hand-finished concrete and 1/4 inch per foot for exposed aggregate, unless another drainage method keeps water from pooling.
The Town's deck rules
For a deck poured with a new pool, the Town of Flower Mound's swimming pool packet has the deck steel and electrical bond inspected before any concrete is placed, and sets the deck at least 3½ inches thick with 3/8-inch rebar no more than 18 inches on center. The Town makes no concrete inspection unless it is at least 38 degrees and rising, or when the Assistant Building Official finds it too wet. For a new deck around an existing pool, the Town's residential permit guidelines name wood decks, which need a permit, and concrete flatwork, which doesn't unless it is structural, attached to a driveway or the house foundation, or in the public right-of-way; ask Building Inspections which applies.
In Justin, one of the towns we serve, about 51.7 percent of homes were built in 2010 or later, and soil maps put about 34.3 percent of the town's mapped land on Slidell clay and about 65.1 percent in soils rated Very limited for homes without basements, with shrink-swell among the reasons. Its own page covers stamped concrete pool decks in Justin. Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing will talk through your ground and the Town's rules when the deck is measured.

(469) 526-3886Stamped overlays on an existing deck
Stamping can also go into a special coating over old concrete rather than into a new pour, Brickform notes, and typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2026 give stamped concrete overlays 15 to 25 years. QUIKRETE, writing about its own cement resurfacer, warns that old cracks can reappear when the base concrete moves, so cracked or sunken slabs go to pool deck repair first; the other coatings for an old deck are covered under pool deck resurfacing.

(469) 526-3886Stamped concrete pool deck questions and answers
Is stamped concrete good for pool decks?
Brickform lists pool decks among the uses for stamped concrete, which gives the look of stone, brick or tile in one poured slab, and sealers such as W. R. Meadows' DECK-O-GRIP W/B are sold for stamped concrete in pool areas. The points to plan for are traction when wet and the control joints.
What is the typical cost of a stamped concrete pool deck?
National figures for 2026 put a new stamped concrete pool deck at $12 to $20 a square foot including labor, against $4 to $8 for a plain poured slab. Over an existing deck, typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2026 put a stamped or custom-texture overlay at $10 to $20 a square foot. Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing measures the deck before pricing it.
What is the downside of stamped concrete?
The sources point to traction and cracking. A film sealer can get slick when wet unless grit goes into the first coat, Brickform says, and concrete cracks when it can't move freely with changes in moisture and temperature, the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association explains, which is why Brickform tools or cuts control joints every six feet.
Can an existing pool deck be stamped?
Yes, with an overlay: Brickform's stamping goes into a special coating as well as into wet concrete, and typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2026 give stamped concrete overlays 15 to 25 years. The slab underneath has to be sound first because, as QUIKRETE warns, old cracks can come back through a new surface when the base concrete moves.
How often does a stamped pool deck need resealing?
It depends on the sealer. Brickform says film-forming sealers, the kind it recommends for stamped decks because they bring out the color, need recoating every 18 to 24 months, while penetrating sealers last three to five years but do less for color. Around a salt-water pool, it advises a sealer made to resist chlorides.
