Polished marble and glass pool finish under clear water

What goes into a polished pool finish

Polished marble

CL Industries' Hydrazzo blends white and colored marble aggregates with white Portland cement and graded color aggregates, and CL says the mix resists spot etching, permanent scale and algae. Because the surface can be polished to an even luster, CL adds, complaints about roughness are virtually eliminated. SGM's Durazzo is another pre-blended polished marble, natural marble in premium cement, ground after application with diamond disks to a glass-like surface.

Marble, pebble and glass

NPT's PolishedScapes mixes marble with glass aggregate and is polished with diamond abrasives, the smoothest of NPT's finishes. Wet Edge Technologies hand-polishes the whole surface of its Primera Stone with diamond-grit pads to bring out the color of the stones and glass accents, and Pebble Technology International buff-polishes PebbleBreeze, a pebble blend with glass beads. Textured finishes left unpolished are covered under pebble pool finishes.

Glass bead finishes

Glass bead finishes are the other smooth family. NPT's JewelScapes Classic is 100% glass beads in white cement with colored pigment, and Pebble Technology International's PebbleBrilliance blends glass beads with natural stone for foot comfort and color in the water. Designer Concrete Coatings, the Australian maker of Designer Beadcrete, calls its reflective aggregate slip resistant but not coarse, and voids its warranty where it goes on thinner than 8 mm. A pool lined in glass mosaic instead is covered under glass tile pool finishes.

How a polished finish goes on

Prep and thickness

On a refinished pool, CL Industries calls for undercutting at least 3 inches around tile, return lines, lights and main drains, and an approved scratch coat, before Hydrazzo goes on. Its two documents differ on thickness: the data sheet allows up to 1 inch, the application sheet 3/8 to 3/4 inch, warning that thicker material needs layering and thinner material dries too fast and cracks or crazes.

Exposing and polishing

SGM's Durazzo cures overnight and is acid washed the next morning, starting at half muriatic acid and half water. The walls are polished before the floor, so nobody has to stand on a slick wet floor: one light pass of a 70-grit diamond disk over the whole pool, then a second at 120 grit where swim-outs, spas and other high-contact areas need it. CL Industries exposes Hydrazzo the same day after at least 4 hours of cure at 80°F and rising, or after an overnight cure, washing the walls from the floor up and the floor from the deep end to the shallow.

CL polishes with its water-driven Triton, run at 3800 to 4000 psi so the water keeps washing the dust away, keeps the abrasives off the tile line, and finishes corners, steps, benches and light niches by hand. It warns that metallic sanding discs or polishers driven by hydraulic oil can permanently destroy the curing of a cement finish.

Glass bead takes its own exposure

Pebble Technology International says glass finishes usually need different exposure methods from pebble finishes. Designer Concrete Coatings waits for a hard set, at least 24 to 48 hours after the work is finished, before the final acid detailing of Beadcrete, and warns that acid on a dry, green surface will damage it.

  • Hydrazzo 3/8 to 3/4 in. (CL application sheet)
  • Durazzo: 70-grit pass, then 120-grit (SGM)
  • Triton polisher at 3800–4000 psi (CL)
  • Beadcrete at least 8 mm (Designer Concrete Coatings)

From the fill to the first year

Pebble Technology International keeps its smoother PebbleFina and PebbleBreeze surfaces evenly dry until the fill, with no water dripping or puddling on them. CL Industries says a cement finish takes up to a year to cure, so the first 10 to 12 months of care matter most, and a Hydrazzo finish whose start-up went wrong can be acid washed and polished again.

Approved applicators and the makers' warranties

A polished finish's warranty is the maker's, on the maker's terms. CL Industries warrants Hydrazzo against manufacturing defects for 10 years only when a factory-approved applicator installs it and the owner registers within 30 days, and it doesn't count staining or hydration as defects; SGM gives Durazzo 1 year as standard, extended to 5 years for homes when registered. Ask any contractor which of these brands it is approved to apply.

Polished finishes in Flower Mound's heat and wind

CL Industries applies Hydrazzo only above 40°F and rising, with the air at 60°F and rising, and mists it in dry heat or wind so it doesn't craze during the overnight cure. Designer Concrete Coatings shades fresh Beadcrete on hot, dry, windy days and keeps rain off it until it sets hard. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Grapevine Dam, on the town's southern edge, average 22.1 days a year at 100°F or hotter, 11.2 of them in a normal August, and 44.3 nights at or below freezing.

One caution for later: the National Plasterers Council's torching method for abnormal discoloration can't be used safely on glass bead surfaces. And before work starts, the 2024 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, which the Town adopted by Ordinance No. 31-25, says no permit is required for replastering or resurfacing an existing pool or spa; confirm it with the Town of Flower Mound's Building Inspections all the same.

In Southlake, where the median owner-occupied home is valued at $1,014,500 in 2020–2024 survey estimates, the same work is covered under polished pool finishes in Southlake.

Polished and glass bead finish costs around Dallas–Fort Worth

Glass bead and neighboring finishes
Glass bead finish (DFW, 2026)
$10,000–$18,000
Glass bead aggregate, per sq ft (DFW, 2025)
$8–$12
Pebble finish (DFW, 2026)
$8,000–$15,000
Quartz plaster (DFW, 2026)
$6,500–$10,000

Published Dallas–Fort Worth figures, not our prices. A real price needs a look at the pool.

SGM says Durazzo sits at a higher price point because of its natural marble and the extra polishing step. Of the four finishes above, quartz pool finishes cost the least, and the guide to pool finishes compared sets each finish's price beside its surface life.

Polished pool finish questions and answers

What is the best finish for a swimming pool?

It depends on the pool and the owner. The National Plasterers Council says any of the finishes can perform for years in a well-made, well-maintained pool once their strengths and weaknesses are understood. A polished finish offers a smooth feel and, by CL Industries' account, resistance to spot etching, scale and algae; against that, it costs more and the Council rates it 8 to 12 years. Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing can weigh both for your pool.

Which pool finish lasts the longest?

The National Plasterers Council rates polished finishes at 8 to 12 years, behind quartz at 10 to 15 and pebble, the longest-lasting, at 12 to 18. Glass gets longer figures from makers and price guides: SGM expects many glass bead finishes to pass 20 years, and typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2026 give glass bead 15 to 20 years or more and a tile interior 25 or more.

Is a polished finish the smoothest pool finish?

Generally, yes. CL Industries says the more polished a finish, the smoother it feels, while additives such as abalone shell and quartz accents add texture. Three makers name a polished finish as their smoothest: NPT its PolishedScapes, Wet Edge Technologies its Primera Stone and Pebble Technology International its PebbleBreeze.

How much does a glass bead pool finish cost?

Typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2026 put a glass bead finish at $10,000 to $18,000, and Dallas–Fort Worth figures from 2025 put glass bead aggregates at $8 to $12 a square foot. The pool's size and the surface underneath decide where a job falls.

Can a polished pool finish be polished again?

Yes, by the makers' accounts. NPT says PolishedScapes can be re-polished throughout its life to bring back its luster, calling polishing the most benign fix, one that can avoid patching or replastering, and CL Industries leaves owners a used polishing pad for stains or rough spots. No maker says how often a polished finish needs it.
