Cool Deck Repair and Resurfacing in Flower Mound, TX
Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing handles cool deck repair and resurfacing in Flower Mound, Texas: patching damaged spots, stripping and acid-etching worn decks, and splashing on a new Kool Deck topping 1/8 inch thick. Mortex, which invented Keystone Kool Deck in 1962, says its topping significantly lowers the surface temperature of concrete, though it publishes no degree figure.

Kool Deck products and how they differ
Keystone Kool Deck
The original Keystone Kool Deck is mixed on site in a paddle mixer from one Kool Deck unit, a 94-pound bag of white cement, 10 gallons of 20-mesh marble sand and 8 gallons of water, and one unit covers about 300 square feet. Finished, the deck should be about 40 percent smooth and 60 percent void, which Mortex says prevents craze cracking, because the raised knolls can expand and contract into the voids.
Kool Deck Elite
Kool Deck Elite is Mortex's newer, pre-mixed version: a 50-pound bag mixed with water and one Color-Unit pack, covering about 65 square feet, with what Mortex calls an enhanced formula for resistance to modern chemical attack and craze cracking.
Color and heat
Mortex says its darker Designer Colors are warmer than the standard Kool Deck colors, though still more comfortable than plain concrete in summer, and that Kool Deck withstands thermal expansion and contraction better than concrete.
Fresh concrete or an old deck
On fresh concrete, Mortex says Kool Deck carries its own sealer and curing agents. Sources disagree about older decks: SUNDEK, which makes a competing coating, says Kool Deck is designed to bond mechanically to freshly poured concrete within its first 5 hours, while Mortex publishes instructions, using its PTA Bonding Agent, for applying it to existing concrete from the day after a pour onward. Spray-texture coatings and cement overlays, the other ways to refinish a concrete deck, are covered under pool deck resurfacing.

(469) 526-3886Patching a damaged cool deck
For small damaged spots, Mortex sells a Kool Deck Repair Kit holding enough bonder and texture material for about 6 square feet, in the Kool Deck colors. Its patch instructions start from an area free of loose and deteriorated concrete: the patch and the deck around it are soaked, the etch of 1 part muriatic acid to 1 part water is kept to the patch, a thin coat of PTA bonder is scrubbed in, and the Kool Deck is splashed, re-splashed and troweled until its flats match the deck around it. The patch stays under sand-weighted plastic for exactly two days, and Mortex says washing it often for 6 weeks greatly improves its strength.
Cracked, settled or lifted concrete under the topping is fixed first, and Mortex wants major cracks and structural damage repaired well in advance; that is pool deck repair work.

(469) 526-3886How a cool deck is recoated
Mortex's instructions for Kool Deck on existing concrete run in this order:
Strip to sound concrete
Old toppings and deteriorated concrete come off with a scarifier and then a power washer; a 3000 psi washer can strip paints and polymer toppings. The bonding system holds only to solid concrete, not to brick, wood, tile, natural stone or clay.
Acid etch and wash
The deck is washed with muriatic acid, 1 part to 1 part water on older concrete and 1 to 4 on new, never on dry concrete, and then pressure-washed. If the acid doesn’t boil and bubble, something is still on the deck.
PTA bonding agent
The deck is kept wet for at least an hour, then the gray PTA Bonding Agent is scrubbed on thin with a broom, with the base concrete still showing through.
Splash and trowel
Before the bonder dries, the topping is thrown from a dash brush in two splashes, and the pattern is set with one flat, light trowel pass, for 1/8 inch in all. Kool Deck can’t be applied with a hopper gun.
Two days under plastic
Clear 2-mil plastic weighted with sand stays on for precisely two days, and the deck is washed often for the next 28 days.
Mortex's two sheets give different schedules for using the deck afterward: light walking after 3 days and normal walking after 14 in the existing-concrete instructions, against no light use for a week and walking after two weeks in the care sheet, which also keeps furniture and hard-soled shoes off for the whole 4-week cure. Mortex also warns against neutralizing the etched deck with TSP, whose film breaks the bond, though Sider-Crete recommends it before its own coating.

Cool deck care, weather and permits in Flower Mound
Temperature, rain and frost
Mortex wants the air at 50 degrees and rising, and no warmer than 90, for Keystone Kool Deck, or 95 for Kool Deck Elite; both sheets urge extreme care when temperatures are expected to pass 95°F and say not to apply the topping if rain or frost is predicted. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Grapevine Dam, on the town's southern edge, put the normal high at 95.3°F in July and 95.7°F in August, and give March 14 and November 17 as the 50-percent dates for the last spring freeze and the first autumn one.
Mineral deposits and sealing
Gray mineral deposits build up on Kool Deck at steps and other busy spots as water evaporates and leaves its minerals behind, Mortex says; removing them, with a surface-cleaner attachment on a washer of 3000 psi or more or by annual buffing, is work for experienced contractors. Mortex's Protect-A-Deck, a silicone siloxane water repellent, gives 5 to 10 years of water repellency in Mortex's words and bridges hairline cracks; it goes on decks at least 28 days old, in 2 to 3 coats, and needs three rain-free days to cure.
Permits and Hebron
The Town of Flower Mound's residential permit guidelines speak to new concrete flatwork and to wood decks, not to recoating a concrete deck, so ask the Town's Building Inspections whether your job needs a permit before work starts. Hebron, one of the towns we serve, sits mainly on Houston Black clay, about 55.4 percent of its mapped land, with a linear extensibility of up to 12 percent; its own page covers cool deck repair in Hebron.

(469) 526-3886Cool deck repair questions and answers
Can a cool deck be repaired?
Yes. Small damaged spots can be patched with Mortex's Kool Deck Repair Kit, and damaged edges, depressions and holes can be packed with topping mix just ahead of a full recoat. Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing looks at the topping and the slab before saying which a deck needs.
How much does it cost to resurface a cool deck?
National averages from 2025 put a coat of Kool Deck on a concrete pool deck at about $4 to $6 a square foot, and Dallas figures for 2026 put acrylic and spray-texture deck coatings at $4 to $8 a square foot. A real price needs a look at the deck.
Is cool decking worth it?
Mortex's case rests on comfort: it says the topping significantly lowers the surface temperature of concrete, without giving a degree figure. Against that, the deck needs regular cleaning, and Mortex leaves the removal of mineral build-up to experienced contractors.
Can you paint a cool deck?
Paint gives up the cooling. Mortex says its own Systex Deck Paint has no cooling properties and that on a Kool Deck surface the painted area turns hotter and slicker. Recoating with Kool Deck keeps the cooling topping, starting from stripped, acid-etched concrete.
How do you clean a cool deck?
Mortex's care instructions call for strong soap and water scrubbed in with a nylon bristle broom and rinsed off with a garden hose, without letting dirt or leaves sit on the deck. With a salt water chlorinator, the deck needs rinsing and cleaning often, and spilled pool chemicals are rinsed off at once. For leaf, rust or fertilizer stains, Mortex's Commercial Cleaner is the strongest cleaner it says is safe on its toppings.
