Pool Skimmer Repair and Replacement in Flower Mound, TX

Flower Mound Pool Resurfacing handles pool skimmer repair and replacement in Flower Mound, Texas: worn weirs and baskets, cracked lids and collars, leaks around the skimmer, and replacing a cracked skimmer body, which in a concrete pool is set into the shell itself. The 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code requires every permanent in-ground residential pool to have either a surface skimming system or a perimeter overflow system. Where skimmers alone do that work, it calls for at least one per 800 square feet in a home pool.

Cracked pool skimmer exposed with the deck cut back for replacement

How an in-ground pool skimmer works

The parts

Custom Molded Products (CMP), a skimmer maker, lists the parts of its in-ground skimmer: the body set into the pool wall, a collar and cover at deck level, a weir door, a float valve on some models, and a debris basket. The deck ring collar slides up and down on a friction fit, and extension collars can be stacked on each other to meet the deck height.

What the code asks of a skimmer

Under the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, a surface skimming system has to create a skimming action whenever the water is within its operating range, handle 100 percent of the circulation turnover rate, and have a cleanable strainer, skimmer basket or screen ahead of the pump. The code also holds the design waterline to within plus or minus 1/4 inch at completion where adjustable-weir skimmers are used. The National Plasterers Council recommends turning the water over once a day, drawing about two-thirds from the main drain and one-third from the skimmers.

  • 100% of turnover through the skimming system (2021 ISPSC)
  • Waterline within ±1/4 inch with adjustable weirs (2021 ISPSC)
  • Water at least 2 inches above the skimmer mouth (CMP)
  • Two 2-inch ports (CMP)

How many skimmers a pool needs

Where skimmers are the only overflow system, the 2021 code asks for at least one for every 800 square feet of residential pool surface, one per 500 for public pools and one per 150 for spas, placed to keep skimming effective. CMP's manual sets a tighter figure for its own skimmers, one per 500 square feet of pool surface, and tells installers to check the local building code.

Common pool skimmer problems

Weirs, baskets and lids

CMP's maintenance list is short: check the weir from time to time for free movement and replace it if it is damaged or worn, and empty the basket as needed. It warns against using a cracked or damaged skimmer, and against stepping on a cracked skimmer plate. For public pools only, HOA pools among them, the CDC's Model Aquatic Health Code keeps weirs in place and working at all times and has broken or missing ones replaced immediately.

Low water and a pump running dry

CMP wants the pool water kept at least 2 inches above the bottom of the skimmer mouth. On its skimmers with a float valve, the valve closes the skimmer if the water drops below the mouth or the basket clogs so no water can flow, which keeps the pump from running dry. Evaporation is one of the ways pools lose water, the EPA says, and Grapevine Dam's normal highs for 1991–2020, from NOAA, are 95.7°F in August and 95.3°F in July.

Cracked skimmer bodies and ports

Skimmer bodies crack under stress. CMP warns that overtightening the threaded plugs in the ports can crack the plug or the skimmer body, and that the pipes should rest on undisturbed earth so nothing pulls on the ports once they are connected. Where soil moves, Houston engineering guidelines on pools in expansive clay want the plumbing connections built to take that movement. A crack that runs on from the skimmer into the pool wall is a shell repair, covered under pool crack repair.

Leaks at the skimmer

National 2025 cost figures list a leak around the skimmer, and a leaky seal, as repairs of their own. Confirming that the pool is losing water, and where, follows the steps under pool leak repair.

Replacing a pool skimmer

Setting the new body in concrete

In a concrete pool, the skimmer is part of the shell. CMP's manual surrounds a skimmer formed into the shell with at least 4 inches of structural concrete placed in a monolithic pour, tied to the pool's rebar cage at the tie points on top of the skimmer. Of its two 2-inch ports, the rear one goes to the pump suction; the front one may serve the main drain or an equalizer line, and is plugged if it isn't used. Where new shotcrete meets older shotcrete, the American Shotcrete Association asks for a joint cleaned of laitance by water blasting, sandblasting or wire brushing, with all gloss removed and the surface dampened. Where the coping beside the skimmer is cracked or loose as well, that work is covered under pool coping repair.

Equalizer lines

CMP's manual carries a danger warning to plug the equalizer line with NSF-listed PVC cement, because equalizer fittings can trap hair or body parts and cause severe injury or death. The 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code prohibits equalizers on skimmers outright, and requires skimming devices to be designed and installed so they create no hazard to swimmers. For public pools, the Consumer Product Safety Commission's inspection checklist also covers the drain covers on skimmer equalizer lines.

Bonding the pool water

Since 2008 the National Electrical Code has required the pool water itself to be electrically bonded, CMP notes, typically at the light. For pools with nicheless LED lights, CMP makes a water-bonded skimmer whose bonding plate stays in contact with the water even when the pump is off; its manual gives at least 9 square inches of conductive material, as NEC 680.26(C) requires, with the skimmer's copper wire connected to the pool's bonding grid or loop. Flower Mound's permits follow the 2023 National Electrical Code, and at a new pool's final inspection the Town checks that metal within 5 feet of the pool walls is bonded.

Permits for skimmer work

Under the Town's amended pool code, replacing, repairing or altering a system the code regulates starts with an application to the code official for the required permits. Plumbing work and electrical work each need a Town permit, and the Town's code has pool plumbing and electrical work done by licensed plumbers and electricians authorized to work in the town. Ask Building Inspections which permits a skimmer replacement needs.

Pool skimmer repair questions and answers

How can I repair my inground pool skimmer?

Start with the part that has failed. A sticking or damaged weir and a full basket are the maintenance CMP lists, and a cracked lid or body shouldn't stay in use, by CMP's warning. In a concrete pool, a cracked body is replaced, and the new one is set in structural concrete tied to the pool's rebar.

Can I use epoxy to fix a pool skimmer?

Epoxy is a priced repair for minor skimmer problems: typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures from 2025 put a minor seal or epoxy fix at $150 to $300. A cracked body is another matter, since CMP warns against using a cracked or damaged skimmer at all.

How much does it cost to replace a pool skimmer?

Dallas figures for 2026 put skimmer replacement at an average of $3,000, and a national 2025 guide gives $1,500 to $3,000 for an in-ground pool. Smaller fixes cost far less: national 2025 figures run $50 to $300 for skimmer repairs and $100 to $130 to replace a leaky seal.

Where is the pool skimmer located?

In the pool wall at the water's surface, with its collar and cover at deck level. The 2021 code has skimmers placed to keep effective skimming action, and CMP keeps the water at least 2 inches above the bottom of the skimmer's mouth.

Why is my pool skimmer not pulling water?

Check the water level and the basket first. CMP's float valve shuts the skimmer when the water falls below the mouth or the basket is clogged, to protect the pump, and CMP has the weir checked for free movement and replaced if it is damaged or worn.
